Embarking on Interviews!

This week, I contacted several professionals, including graduate students and university professors, to conduct informational interviews. Two of them replied, and one of the interviews was this week.

To prepare for the interview, I prepared a list of questions. My strategy was to start with a question, predict where the conversation is heading, and then ask questions based on those predictions. This didn’t quite work because I began thinking about what I would ask next rather than actually listening to the responses. Moreover, the Zoom time limit ran out faster than I anticipated, and the end of the interview was very rushed. Next time, I will focus on the response and decide on the question later because the reason I’m conducting these interviews in the first place is so that I can learn more about the field. I also might switch to Google Meet so I can have one hour instead of 40 minutes. I might also see if there is a way to record the interview so I can look back at it in case I didn’t quite understand some of the answers.

My next interview is this coming Wednesday (October 25th), and I’m so excited to meet him and learn about his views. Hopefully, the lessons I learned from my first interview will aid me in this one.
